Gabriele T. Raacke uses a now mostly forgotten technique to paint on glass. Known as reverse-painting-on-glass, the artist applies paint on the rear of a glass pane, working backwards and reversed (mirrored). The foreground must be painted first, the background last and the painter sees her work as shown on the left.
The side of the work typically on display shows all layers. Since the layers of paint visible from the front have been directly applied to the back of the glass, the work gains a luminance unique to the reverse painting process.
This book features a selection of glass paintings painted by the artist between 2005 and 2016.
